Inveiglements include 481 full-color illustrations of fauna & flora fossil, and museum quality diorama of extinct creatures. 6" x 4". This pocket-sized book is handy to carry, provides a clear overview with hundreds of colorful illustrations by Prof. Raymond Perlman (Univ. of Ill.) of plant & animal fossils and contains useful notations of species found at various timelines. The lead author Rhodes, President of Cornell University, had ready access to some of the finest specimens and documents available. As an introduction and pocket guide this primer is to be recommended, and useful for full spectrum of age groups to all wanting ready access to reliable basic information on paleontology. Unfortunately, the list of nine textbooks and references tabulated on page 25 is outdated (1936 to 1962) and no mention, even in passing, is made of DNA. Thank you very much for this very nice book. The books that I am buying and so very anctios for aree to give away to children to teach to learn more about the earth. And I must find one about meteors etc. I have one little girl who wants to know everything, and I myself know nothing.. So any advice is appreciated. Great little book to take around on fossil hunts. It has very basic common fossils and helps train your eye for what to look for. They are illustrated, not photos.

Actually, that was kind of mean since it is still enjoyable. I do hope that sometime someone will get across just how many millions of years ago these critters lived and get a reader able to really understand just how long ago that it was. Creation takes a long time.

Good buy for the money. I started fossil hunting last year, and I found prehistoric shark teeth, shells, trilobites, etc.. I’m a novice, however this little book has been very helpful. The pics, description & historical info was awesome, and the size of the book can easily fit in anyone’s backpack or back pocket. In short, it’s highly recommended for any age, easy to read & carry, and good value for money.

This handy little guide is compact easy to use, and very informative. I recommend it for anyone interested in taking up fossil hunting as a hobby. It contains a concise listing of a variety of fosils and where they might be found. It is a perfect educational gift.

Nice pocket resource, I keep mine in my car for fossil discoveries while on the road.
