MAKOTO Handmade Sharp Katana Samurai Sword, Black, Choose Your Tsuba (Warrior)

Very Interesting build characteristics.. These are the closest imitation of a katana as I've ever found.. ---Before I rate this katana, please know that I own the Makoto branded Minamoto and Warlord katanas - and I like them, but they are different from the Warrior and the Round Dragon katanas. My Geisha katana is also well made, but it carries a Ryujin stamp on the Seppa washer. The blade is just over 28 inches long and arrived sharpened and straight, but the blade is made with a 30mm stock (spine to edge) instead of the 32mm standard - clue #1. The sword (without the Saya) weighs only 2lb & 7oz, which is rather suspiciously light for a No-Bohi blade - clue #2. There are several ugly, uneven surface areas on the blade from hammering marks that should have been flattened out much earlier, during the end of the forging process. Maybe this is just the item that was sent to me, but I would like to read what other reviewers have to say about this product. None of the hardware draws a magnet, but there is a (suspiciously faint) magnetic pull throughout the entire length of the Tsuka handle - clue #3. The Tsuba twists around the blade (about a degree or two), on the tang. The Mekugi pegs can be removed from the handle, yet the Tsuka handle remains solidly attached to the tang - clue 4.. The Itomaki wrap is loose and absolutely requires the hockey stick tape treatment, or it won't last the hour.. It is obviously made for appearance and not any actual use.. Point of balance is about 5.5" from the Tsuba, which is a common point for a REAL katana, so simply "handling" it might not reveal the deception taking place.. Sori angle is an optimal 3/4" as most Makoto swords I've handled. The Saya fits the Habaki well enough, but is otherwise piano black and plain. And since the sword this Saya is designed to fit is 30mm blade stock, it will not fit any standard katana size, so don't expect to swap pieces with any sword, except maybe another 30mm sword. The Makoto (standard) metal Koiguchi piece is noticeably absent from this set of swords. The Round Dragon, the Warrior and the Square Dragon used to be grouped together within the same set of "No-Bohi style" swords, each sword priced the same, and I believe they probably should've stayed that way.. Avoid these three (Non-Bohi) katana shaped decorations - they are sharpened, but they are not of any kind of standard.

The quality of katana was much better than I anticipated. - Great hamon (seems hardened) and sori (for slashing strikes) - Metal alloy seems tough and slightly bends without breaking (didn't see a point of standing 200 lbs on it, but cut pig carcass in 2 with signature (,-coma shape) katana curve - great balance point and quality put in handle - really like habaki and tsuba - perfect weight with balance let me handle it one-handedly near tsuba However it had some small imperfections but it's a sword, not a knife, so it was expected it went through some testing before being delivered. - Noticed small abrasions on ha - almost invisible to eye, blade had 3 small dents on ha about 1mm deep, most likely from test striking. - Had to water-stone sharpen it to 10,000 and blade became perfect. - Seems it comes sharpened only with 6,0000 or 8,000 wet-stones (if it was sharpened over 10,000 - 15,000 those blade defects wouldn't probably occur during testing) - Saya is made nice, however, coiguchi (sword opening) is a little bit loose - could've been easily fixed with a layer of epoxy resin inside - sword would've easily cut it's perfect shape inside epoxy resin, so it wouldn't shake inside. and protect blade instead. Oh well, considering great craftsmanship of this sword and few imperfections - I've decided to keep it and sharpened with 15,000 wet stone accurately so it wouldn't scratch hamon. Once the handle starts wearing out I'll check mei signature and see if master left any notes behind.

The sword feels strong but there are defects in the blade and it did not come sharp at all.
