Decalogue: The Ten Commandments

Great read. Highly recommended.

This purchase was an excellent addition to my film library. These ten films sit as a unit very near the top of my Greatest Films list. The book is an excellent companion piece to the DVD set and illustrates the inevitable changes that an auteur makes during the actual shooting of a film. Kieslowski was a true genius …sharing the master's seat with Ozu.

If you're interested in the purely technical aspects of screenwriting, this may not be the book for you. However, every short story is engaging in its own way. If you want to know how screenwriting relates to life, you'll surely enjoy this little book. It's a good preparation for the upcoming Decalogue BR box that Criterion Collection will release next month.

Kieslouski’s is an exceptionally insightful artist!

This book has wrongly attributed the commandments to the episodes. It uses the protestant order of the 10 commandments when the dekalog series uses the Catholic order. This huge mistake starts with the second commandment and goes wrong all the way down. People will be utterly confused when reading this book, simply because the commandments with the exception of the first are all wrongly attributed to the episodes. Kieslowski must be rolling in his grave!

Precise and fast: highly recommended!

I bought this book on the basis that my Artificial Eye DVD of the Dekalog (aka the only Region 2 version in existence) was not quite up to standard with the subtitles; you could tell the dialogue was truncated, and short verbal exchanges (most noticeable in Dekalog 9) were not subtitled at all. This book is a perfect redress to that. I've just started reading Dekalog 4, and already elements of 2 and 3 have been made much clearer to me. Even for someone with a good subtitled version, this book is pretty essential because it allows for a real insight into what Kieslowski was trying to achieve with his mighty work, his writing style (excellently translated) giving away tiny little details that might have been impossible to get just through simply watching the films. All in all, a must-buy for anyone interested in the works of Kieslowski, saddled with the AI DVDs, or just willing to give the works a look without actually watching them.

Just what I wanted, and in brand new condition (possibly POD). Excellent.
