What type of paints can be used?

Any paint that will stick to unfinished wood. I used craft paint and it's fine. I suggest a coating of sealer, like polyurethane, if you are planning on them being used rather than displayed.

Can the unpainted wood be separated from the black wheel bases?

The trains are fully assembled and can't be separated.

Is this compatible with Ashima train also ?

They are compatible with all wooden railway trains.
