Harrison’s is an encyclopedic reference work covering the practice and science of internal medicine. Beginning with a section on general topics (including evidence-based medicine, screening and prevention of disease, geriatrics and end-of life care), the book proceeds to cardinal manifestations of disease (such as back pain, fever and headache), which remains the most popular section of the book. The core is a comprehensive presentation of over 4700 diseases in the major specialties of internal medicine: oncology and hematology; infectious diseases; cardiology; respiratory; gastroenterology; immune system, connective tissue and joints; endocrinology; and neurology. Key Features: Full colour content throughout. Includes exciting new full colour diagrams and more colour clinical photos which have been integrated into the text for easy access. High profile editorial board. All the editors are world authorities in their respective fields, from Dr Kasper (Infectious Diseases) to Dr Braunwald (Cardiology). Part on “Cardinal Manifestations of Disease” (55 chapters). This continues to be one of the most used parts of the book. All the major manifestations, such as fever and rash, are presented in depth and the reader is referred to the disease section for the complete chapter. New part on “Critical Care Medicine” (10 chapters in 3 new sections). This field is extremely important due to the growing number of critical care units (eg cardiac, general medicine, respiratory and neurological) in hospitals. New part on “Bioterrorism And Clinical Medicine.” Edited by Dr Anthony Fauci who leads the US government biomedical efforts on national preparedness against bioterrorist attacks. “Approach To The Patient” and “Treatment” sections. These have been expanded throughout. Comprehensive presentation of HIV disease. The HIV/AIDS chapter covers all aspects of HIV disease and includes all the important advances made in therapeutic strategies. 63 thoroughly updated chapters. 12 brand new chapters. These comprise: Screening And Prevention Of Disease; Medical Evaluation Of The Surgical Patient; Psedomembranous Colitis Due To Clostridium Difficile; Microbial Bioterrorism; Chemical Bioterrorism; Radiation Bioterrorism; Unstable Angina; Principles Of Critical Care Medicine; Acute Respiratory Failure; Familial Mediterranean Fever; Fibromyalgia Arthritis Associated With Systemic Disease; and Perimenopause Transition And Hormone Reproductive System. What's more, a free trial subscription to Harrison’s Online is available with the book and there is a new free Web Resource Centre aimed at students and containing additional illustrations, questions and answers, and case studies. Great but
Another great book which competes with Cecil and Oxford Textbook of medicine. It is probably the most popular book world wide. The OTM is better and more readable. Cecil is my current choice of large readable text. It is great value but for me doesn't always hit the right spot.

The Gold Standard in Color
I've been using the online edition of Harrison's 16th for a while now, and only just got the physical book. Even though the print is tiny and there's a dearth of white space to rest your eyes, the colorized text boxes are a big help. I really like the Treatment boxes in with color-coordinated headings - it makes it much easier to get to the heart of what you're looking for. Also, the charts in color make a difference that you don't necessarily appreciate in the online version. Harrison's is of course The Bible of internal medicine. No other text I know of contains quite the wealth of information on pretty much every topic in internal medicine. This edition lives up to its stellar reputation in the IM world.

Cecil Essential

Don't read without abundant background knowledge

Harrison's review
This is by far the most comprehensive and easy to read book I have seen in medicine. Something I wish I had purchased when in medical school instead of buying all these other smaller books which do not give you enough and as good of information. Highly recommended for medical graduates. However, I would not recommend this book for RNs or even PAs, because it gives you detailed information that you would most probably won't need.
