5V 2A not enough to run speakers, Up the amps
Issues, Issues, Issues. Was having trouble getting these working. 5V 1A power supply was not enough. Arduino seemed to not work, but manual trigger did ?? When speakers came on 5V dropped below 3V. So I overkilled it with 5V 5A power, works great. Will got back and find exact power needed for project. Hope this helps , was frustrating for a while

RX (dfplayer) goes to TX (pico, etc) and visa versa
Looking back this was a dumb move, but I don't usually work with uart. I was banging my head because the dfplayer wasn't working. Until I switch my rx/tx. I thought like other devices same pin names connect to eachother. I am putting this review up to save time and pain for other dummies like me. This player does as advertised.

No powered output.
Junk, never got them to drive a speaker, had to connect an external amp. They work as am mp3 decoder, but the built in amplifier did nothing even with external power and a cap.

Quick and inexpensive way to add MP3 playback to any project.
What I like about this "DFplayer" is that I can set it up in standalone mode. It has speaker outputs for small loads, and also has stereo pre-amp/earphone outputs. This small project is simply going to be a "sleep machine" that I can load with my own sounds. One button (ground to IO1) is "Previous" (momentary) and "Volume Down" (if the button is held down.) Another button (ground to IO2) is "Next" (momentary) and "Volume Up" (if the button is held down.) The last button is from ADKEY1 to ground through a 33K ohm resistor for "Pause/Play." Give it 5 volts, and you are good to go! The player also has an interface for serial comms, (TX, RX and BUSY) so it is Arduino ready, and there seems to be a fairly robust library for it. I believe the board is looking for 3.3v levels on the comm pins, so level shifting may be needed. Be aware that the files on the SD card (formatted as FAT32) need to be labeled as 0001.mp3, 0002.mp3, and so forth. There can be folders, and quite a few files, but that's overkill for what I needed. I think this would make a great soundboard, and there is some decent (not great) documentation for it. For the price, this thing is versatile and effective, and I recommend it. Knocking off a star because the documentation is spotty-good for some parts and really not helpful for other things.

Works on my machine
I saw a lot of discussion about knockoff and versions that do not work. The ones I received on this order work great with an ESP32 and a 2GB SD card formatted with Windows with a bit of research and effort.

these are extremely sensitive to power, other manufactures have easier to use versions
I have used DFPlayer Mini's in the past from a different manufacturer. These are EXTREMELY finicky. If the power is not absolutely perfect these will not operate. Even with 1k resistors for the TX and RX they still work only about 1/2 the time. kinda a bummer

Works as expected
I picked this set up to add some sound to a halloween prop. I have it serial connected to an Arduino Nano so that I can motion activate it with a PIR sensor. I was able to find simple code online and everything worked as expected. This one uses 3v logic, so I had to use a resistor, but that's pretty well documented. Also, I believe these only support 3W speakers directly, but for my use case that was fine. I did find that I did not have to rename my .mp3 file to a number, but I only have one file I'm playing when motion triggers. Overall, very happy.

Plays fairly well
For fun, I wired the DAC ports to a powered desktop speaker system and it sounded great, although that's how I intend to use it. I'm driving a small 3W 4Ohm speaker from this, and I really don't need to put it to full volume to get decent sound for my "effects" files. On the software side, I found that depending on the "track completion" message through the serial port was problematic due to conflicts with other components, so I just use the BUSY pin to determine when a track has completed. My one real gripe is that the chip does not remember its last volume setting when re-started, so it always initializes at full volume which draws a lot of power...

These tiny modules are very useful for a range of projects and can easily be connected to the Arduino or other microcontrollers. There is plenty of information available on how to set these up either as stand alone mp3 players or with other devices. The player even has a built in amp (3W) so it can be connected directly to a single speaker and stereo line out is also supported.
