Jemma Kidd Make-Up Secrets: Solutions to Every Woman's Beauty Issues and Make-Up Dilemmas

Hands down, this is the best book out there. Every page gives useful information and it is extremely well organized. In each chapter. she addresses how this topic applies to every woman and breaks it down by category (for eyes, the four main shapes & techniques specific to each, for skin tone she explains which color works for different complexions and why). Finally, she provides the pro's and con's (which method is harder, which brush works better for certain things but are worse for other uses, etc.). This is easy to follow while being full of insights used by the pro's. Her approach is "show and tell"- there are pictures or photos depicting every step without overloading the reader. Best of all, after reading this book, I find her highly credible. She shares her preferred products - some are fancy but quite a few can be found in your local drugstore. Her information is useful. accessible and practical. In short, she's the real deal- her tips make sense and can easily be incorporated in any beauty routine. I was especially impressed with her knowledge and understanding about how what you directly eat impacts what you see in the mirror. This was extremely informative, especially the recommendations offered (telling readers what to eat to help common complaints). I have not seen this explained so clearly or comprehensively as she did. This isn't about how to apply make-up but so much more. She clearly thought about it from a reader perspective- addressing and providing solutions for many different kinds of women. First book I read from her and will certainly not be the last. I'm a big fan. Every woman (from 15-70) should own a copy. Thanks for all the useful feedback, Jemma!

I received my copy of Jemma Kidd's latest book this morning and having thought there wasn't anything to add from her brilliant first one (Jemma Kidd Make-Up), I have been thrilled to find that this one is packed with even more beautiful pictures, step-by-step instructions and practical advice: even an experienced make-up artist will find gems of information! The book is divided in to two sections: Part 1 'Making Make-up Work for You' which includes working with your skin-tone, best looks for different eye shapes and even recreating iconic make-up looks like Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren. Part 2: 'The Problem Solver' addresses multiple beauty & skincare concerns, including how to use make-up to look younger...perfect!! There are also 5 minute examples of a 'date' look and 'work' look to name just a couple. Jemma has a wonderful writing style of educating women without patronising them and instead gives them the tools to use make-up with confidence. I am so impressed with this book that I plan to purchase more for my girlfriends as birthday/Christmas gifts as I know they will love it too. Highly highly recommended.

i never really wear make up before. But because i was breaking out and the acne's just left me a bad scars on my face, so i have to hide them and start using make up. I purchased this book to give me knowledge about make up on how to, what to do and not to do. I'm glad i purchased this book coz i learned a lot from it. It is very informative. Now, i learned to do smokey eyes and all that. I'm learning everyday about make up and also how to take care of our skin. This book will give guide you also on what make up suppose to be look like during the night and day. It also have a guide on recreating the looks for different occasions. Jemma Kidd gives a good overall view from skin care to finishing touches starting from within, including realistic lifestyle guidelines. The book covers the basics well, with many other looks to consider for when you are past the beginning stage. Ms. Kidd explains herself with well-rounded information and plenty of photos. Nearly 50 pages (of 224) are dedicated to eye makeup. This includes 5 different shaped eyes and a nice superimposed photo of the nostril to whole eye area, mapping out and labeling the specific parts for distinct clarity. This clarity is consistent throughout the book. Personally I find the format of how the text and visuals are laid out, are almost without concern for balance or flow. The information is there, but it could be a top-notch book if the layout was given a better artistic esthetic. My copy is hardcover and the quality of the book is excellent, and the size is large enough without being too cumbersome considering it can be used as a text book of sorts. If you want a well-rounded make-up how-to library, then you would not be disappointed to add this to your shelf. The information is presented in an understandable, easy to read manner with some fresh insights on makeup. (I never saw a citrus corrector before this...). I like that Ms. Kidd likes Dove Beauty Bar for a cleanser, Oil of Olay and Neutrogena moisturizers. This is an example of her realistic approach to looking your best.

I've always been skeptical of make-up guides. Personally, I've read some that were less than accurate or written in a way that was hard to understand, so I couldn't duplicate the steps to acquire the same result as the writer. However, Ms. Kidd's book has been a great read and a big help! I was familiar with some of the tips, but there were added things that I had never heard of and Ms. Kidd explains the importance of each step. Reading this book has been like taking a professional make-up course. I have greatly enjoyed it and look forward to referring to it for cosmetic-related inquiries in the future.

If you have read Kevyn Aucoin's books, there will be no surprises in Emma Kidd's book. The book's content was well organized and product-color information easy to find but there were no "fresh" insights on makeup application that I saw. A nice primer for those new to makeup.

As being a women I had to learn my make up ideas on my own what a mess and wasted a lot of make up. With this book you have a professional right there with you. Great pictures and a lot of information I never knew. I'm taking my time with this book to get the best from it. I recommend this book to everyone who wears make up. Great book.

This book has so many clear explanations about the what /why/where of makeup, explaining the reasons behinds many techniques. I read about it in Vogue or somewhere and had to get it for myself. I learned a lot of valuable skincare and health as well as makeup tips. Jemma Kidd has that cool British way of instructing the reader about what to do/not do to look one's best. Then I had grown women friends fall in love with the book. A couple of them got the book for their teenage daughters because some advice applies to young skin and she really helps those girls not look overly-made-up. I also bought it for a school Secret Santa for a 13 year old girl - she absolutely loves it and so do her friends. This is a great gift for any woman from 13- on up. I have to buy another one because a friend took mine overseas...I really need that book - I have a few events to go to and I need the excellent guidelines for day/night/glamour/office/skincare and diet. If you buy this book and leave it on your table or coffee table,woman will find it engrossing, informative and entertaining. Highly recommended.

Diese Frage stellt man sich als Frau bestimmt dann und wann, wenn man sich bereits ein gewißes Maß an Fertigkeiten und Routine angeeignet hat, was die Kunst des Schminkens angeht, noch dazu, wenn man andere Bücher zum Thema besitzt... u.a. Jemma Kidd's ersten Band, der zweifelsohne sehr gelungen ist. Keine Make-up Artist kann das Rad neu erfinden, so sollten sich an den "Geheimnissen" interessierte potentielle Käuferinnen keine Illusionen machen: bereits veröffentlichte Wahrheiten werden in diesem Buch "anders" präsentiert: Jemma Kidd legt den Schwerpunkt im ersten Teil wieder auf Basics wie Hautpflege, die richtige Wahl der Produkte unter Berücksichtigung des Hautzustandes, das Schminken der jeweiligen Gesichtspartien inklusive Hervorheben der Schokoladenseiten, bzw Korrekturen diverser "Makel". Sie geht auf die Auswahl der Richtigen Farben ein und präsentiert, als "Goodie" der zweiten Ausgabe, wie frau als "Nicht-Model" am Besten mit Trends und Fashion Make-up's umgeht und diese bewusst um- und einsetzt. Sehr gut gefallen hat mir ihre Herangehensweise auf die Zeitlos-Looks in Ahnehnung an große Kinodiven wie Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner... Alleine die Fotos machen einen Kauf des Buches "zum Schuh' ". Der zweite Teil des Buches widmet sich dann den tatsächlichen "Problemen", ich hätte es hier gerne Herausforderungen genannt, welche beim Schminken auftauchen: So bespricht Jemma Kidd die ausführliche Pflege der Haut, wie man gewisse Probleme erkennt und beheben kann, welche Bedürfnisse die Haut hat und gibt zahlreiche Tipps, die der Haut gut tun, da klammert sie sogar ein Kapitel über Essgewohnheiten und Superfoods ein. Im Kapitel "beauty first aid" erfährt man wieder, was zu tun ist, entsprechen die Augen-, Gesichts- oder Lippenform usw nicht der "Norm" und benötigen somit etwas mehr Beachtung.. Persönlich geallen mir diese und die darauf folgenden Tipps für reifere Frauen bei ihrem Berufskollegen Robert Jones besser. Ebenso die abschließenden 5-Minuten-Looks bringen nicht sehr viel - und der Grund zum Sterne - Abzug ist, dass ich mir hier mehr "Model-Diversity" gewünscht hätte. Gerade in einem so internationalen Business wie Mode und Make-up, wären mehr Fotos mit nicht kaukasischen Models wünschenswert gewesen. Alles in allem ein wunderschöner Bildband, wer sich für die Thematik interessiert und gerne Make-up Bücher besitzt, wird an diesem hier sehr viel Freude haben!
