Yes, very similar to the old Sony version. I just got mine, and can't tell the difference. I can't speak to reliability as they are only three days old, but they feel and sound the same.

What shape is the plug / jack on these headphones. Straight plug or 90 degree angle plug?

This is a 90 degree gold L shaped plug

Will this fit 5 year-old child's head?

The headband itself is retractable/expandable in that you can expand it by pulling on it, and can push it back down to retract for smaller heads. Fully retracted, from the bottom of the earbud to the top of the headband is about 5 1/2". It might be a little large. The more important issue I think is the size of the earbud, which I think is too large for a child. It seems that headphones that sit outside the ear would be healthier for a child who is still developing.
