Is this the same as shock treatment ?

No, this helps keep water clear, a shock treatment is a large overdose of chlorine at first use

I put the advised amounts of this in my spa and the water has gone from cloudy to brown. Does anyone have any advice to why this has happened?

Yes change your water, the advice given to me was if it doesn’t look clear change it. The cleanly clarified I found you have to put a little more than recommend but you need to change the filter more often as the clarifier clogged it quicker.

Does this reduce alkalinity in the water
