A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl's father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child. Review: Jeffery Dean Morgan...... nuff said - When someone told me that the father of Sam and Dean Winchester from Supernatural was going to play Neagan in The Walking Dead, which was an amazing role I must say, I was shocked! He later on ended up playing a father to a young girl possessed by opening the Dybbuk box. This role was perfect for Jeffery Dean Morgan. He's such an underated actor. Review: The Possession. Scary, Awesome - OMG I just finished watching this from desertcart rental freaking awesome way scarrier than expected, two outstanding actors give top not performances ( Jeffrey Dean Morgan-John Winchester father of Dean, and Sam winchester on the TV show Supernatural ) plays the dad ( Kira Sedgewick-of The Closer ) plays the mom. After a divorce the dad gets his own house while driving past some houses his youngest daughter ( Emily ) spots a garage sale his daughter reminds him that he needs dishes, they stop and while looking at things ( Emily ) see's an old wooden box with words carved into it. Later on strange things begin happening. After a visit to a professor for a translation then a rabi they learn that the box is actually a prison/vessel to keep a powerful and ancient female demon locked inside, in Jewish language she is named taker of children, a young rabi performs an exorcism and all hell breaks loose The movie is a mix of drama family love and horror it feels very realistic, the actors give excellent performances and play their parts very convincingly. The plot, and scenes are amazing very well done and the overall quality is great definately 5 stars. You can tell that the writers and directors took their time with and put a lot into it

Great Suspense and Interesting Backstory
Let me start off by saying I really enjoyed this movie. Even with the subpar effects and - at times - iffy acting this movie really pulls you in and gets you hooked. I liked the different approach for the evil spirit being a Hebrew spirit instead of the typical European or Asian spirit or demon that you see a lot of these days. An extra neat thing is that they based this on a real spirit in Jewish lore called a Dybbuk. The writer of the movie claims to have bought a "Dybbuk box" at an estate sale in 2001 in the form of a wine box. Apparently it originally belonged to a Holocaust survivor name Havaleh who escaped to Spain and bought it there before moving to the US. Havaleh's grand-daughter told Kevin Mannis, the writer, that it was a family heirloom and so he offered to give back to them. They refused, obviously, because the claimed a Dybbuk was inside. There were a bunch of odd things in the box as well as many strange events that happened to all of the owners including Mannis himself. It was eventually bought on eBay by a student named Iosif Neitzke, who later donated it to Ghost Adventure host Zak Bagans. If you're interested in more of the history of the Dybbuk box and the story behind it I would highly suggest looking it up and reading about it. Even just Dybbuks themselves have a lot of interesting lore behind them.

Good Scary Movie
So they took the run-of-the-mill possession/haunting movie template and gave it a Jewish twist. Starts off slow and boring, typical cheesy family day to day life stuff, then scary stuff starts happening, scarier stuff starts happening more frequently, really scary stuff is now constant and then the climax. If you go into this knowing the history of the Dybbuk box story you will probably enjoy it more. The movie was pretty good, they didn't go over the top which was good. Not many cheap jump scares to be found. The little girls acting was good but when she was trying to look scary she often just looked awkward. The ending takes a dark but somewhat predictable turn.

A ccontemporary Pandora's Box saga. This is a winner.
I recently watched a different movie about an exorcism, an ecumenical exorcism no less, which I found very amusing; especially since it was suypposed tone about the birth of a mythological Jewish demon known as a Dybuuk or something of that nature. It was like, hey everybody let's have an exorcism party, everybody's invited. very strange. anyhow, I enjoyed The Possession but I wish their weren't so many convenient plot holes but it does work. There are some glaring gaps in logic which I find impossible to reconcile; for instance, how is it that the evil trapped within the box can still exert itself to the outside world. In theory, the box is supposed to be a blessed, ancient Judaic holy vessel made specifically to contain the evil. It's too bad the dentist get's killed; he and the mother were made for each other. She sounded like a real pain in the you know what. The biological father is a very likable fellow although the extent of his patience is unreal. In the end we get a glimpse of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, the enclave of Orthodox Judaism and the scene with the elders is very believable and it makes sense. Deciding to hold the exorcism in the physical rehab room in the hospital basement wit all that screaming and mayhem going on is a bit ridiculous, I mean the entire hospital must have known something was going on but at least in The Possession it was a Rabbi who conducted the exorcism. The ending is an unpleasant surprise, the death of the heroic young Rabbi who follows his conscience (and finds a loophole in Rabbinical Scripture) rather than chickening out is heartbreaking, but there again is the plot hole that runs throughout the movie.

It's good for what it is
Quick story recap: The wine cabinet from hell terrorizes people who have it in their possession. A family buys it a garage sale and the results are disastrous for their child who really explores the cabinet. I think this movie is an attempt at being "The Exorcist" for a modern audience. It says based on a true story but the only "true" part is the wine cabinet which is a debatable "truth" as well. The movie is entertaining though. It is well casting and acting is very good. I though the pace of the movie seemed appropriate. It has some freaky moments. It also has some moments that leave you with a feeling of "Oh come on now, that's ridiculous": Not a movie of the year, nor will it be one you must see or must own a copy of. But, hey if horror is your genre or it's Halloween night, it's a decent way to kill time.

A shockingly emotional film about a demon-possessed Jewish victim and her Jewish rabbi exorcist.
I actually had to hunt this movie down and pay to rent it. This may be the only Jewish version of The Exorcist ever made, and it has lots of Hebrew yelling by the young actor who plays the rabbi exorcist. The rabbi is no slouch in his forceful eviction of the demon, and as a Jew myself, I didn't ever learn about any Jewish demonology. Therefore, I cannot attest to the religious accuracy of this movie, but it is scary. How scary? Scary enough to scare a young child, so don't. See you at the movies all my sci-fi friends!

Mero entretenimiento.

THE EXORCIST RELOADED
I am extremely surprised The Possession received negative reviews. It is hard to understand why the critics did not like the film at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the Possession, as it kept me on the edge of the seat for long periods. Believe it or not, the Possession has been inspired by true events. I am doubtful whether every single fact is correct. It is difficult to comment on this. Having watched the film, it creates a spooky and creepy atmosphere. The surprise element is strongly felt. An average American suburban area has been affected by the haunting events. It starts with a mysterious box attempted to be opened and containing valuables treasures. There is a curse behind the box. If you are in pocession of the box, then the demon curses you. The opening sequences set the tone of the film. A middle aged woman has been cursed and her life changes forever. The focus is on one family. The couple are divorced and share custody of two young girls. The younger girl experiences the horrifying moments, as she herself has been controlled and her behaviour arouses concerns from the family. This happens as she becomes obsessed with the mysterious box purchased in a stall. It becomes clear of what is happening. In order to combat the spirits, there is a special ritual to perform. The significance of the box becomes clear. There is a history behind the box. It is interesting and fascinating to learn about. Possession falls into the category of a supernatural horror film

Possessione e Dibbuk
Buon film!
