Claxton Fruit Cake – 5-1 lb Regular Recipe Loaves

What more can I say? Hadn't had fruitcake in literally 30 years, developed a craving for some last week and bought this Claxton. I hit the jackpot, it was everything I wanted and more! My taste buds were thrilled! Superb fruitcake! Worth every penny and more.

Great fruitcake...nice and moist and plenty of fruit

I am one of those seemingly rare people who loves Fruitcake. The Claxton Fruit Cake is the perfect size without being too much. It is one of the best tasting, high quality fruitcakes I've had, with good moisture & the perfect tasty dried fruit ingredients. The fruit cakes are packaged so they arrive in great condition. I love that I can order any time of year to satisfy my fruit cake cravings. I just freeze the logs that I'm not going to eat immediately. They still taste great when thawed for a tasty treat. Great value for the money & way easier than running from store to store looking for this particular brand.

I’m a fruitcake LOVER! My go to is the Trappist Abbey fruitcake and I buy it every Christmas. It’s a dark fruitcake & I love the well balanced flavor and it has the brandy flavor soaked in. It’s also around $26 for a 1lb square vs this Claxton 1lb rectangle for $14. So I thought why not give it a shot as it’s the top rated fruitcake? This is my 1st time trying the Light Claxton fruitcake. It’s good! It’s very moist & full of fruits and nuts. Here’s my main gripe and reason for the 4 star vs 5 star rating-it is VERY peel heavy. My first slice was overpoweringly lemony and orangey. In fact, that’s the only flavor I could discern! I was very disappointed. However, after putting the cut fruitcake into the refrigerator as it advised on the package, the next day and subsequent days the peel flavor mellowed slightly so I could detect other flavors. Not perfect and still lots of peel flavor but enjoyable. Be aware this is NOT a brandy or whisky or other alcohol inclusive fruitcake. You’ll need to add your own so buyer be aware!

Good tasting fruit cake

Throughout this year I ordered a bunch of these reasonably priced Claxton Fruitcakes, which are available during all seasons. And my family liked them. Claxton cakes are a dense, syrupy sweet combination of nuts and dried fruits pressed together with very little flour — Claxton says they are 70% fruit and nuts. There are 2 styles of Claxton cakes: The regular light cakes contain golden raisins and rum flavoring. The dark cakes are made with dark raisins with molasses added, like I would expect to find in the deep South. There is no alcohol in Claxton cakes. Claxton fruit cakes are pretty solid. They don’t fall apart on your fork and should be cut in thin slices to make them easiest to eat. Try putting the slices in the microwave — it makes them softer and even more tasty. Just a tiny slice is a filling and satisfying way to end a nice meal. Claxton Fruit Cakes come in a long bar, not in a circle or square like their competitors. The wrapping keeps the cakes moist, so either keep them wrapped or just eat them quickly. The 1-lb. size is easy to finish. If you put them in the freezer, they come out better than when they went in. Claxton cakes’ main competitors are the Swiss Colony fruit cakes. Last time, I bought the 3-pound, Swiss Colony guaranteed fruitcake, which was gooier, stickier, fruiter, and nuttier (and more expensive) than the Claxton Fruitcakes. After that, we only wanted the Swiss Colony cakes. However, Swiss Colony are really too rich to have all year long, and I didn’t want to look at the calories. Also, Swiss Colony cakes are hard to find except at Christmas, whereas the Claxton cakes are available fresh all year. So, there is a place for everything, I guess. Note that there are two basic types of fruit cakes. Claxton and Swiss Colony make the mainly nut and fruit kind — the other style is more like a baked yeast and flour bread with some chopped nuts and bits of candied fruit added throughout the bread. It is more like what German bakers used to call a "stollen" when I was young(er). If you are looking for the yeasty, bready style, you will only be frustrated if you end up with a Claxton or Swiss Colony type. Instead, search for the other type of fruit bread, instead. Fruitcake is like potato salad. ("Say Wha-a-a?") I mean, there are a dozen-plus versions of portato salad (one even favors vinegar!), but most of us prefer the one we first came to know as kids. Claxton’s tastes just like the delicious fruitcakes my mother made when I was a child. Subjective or not, here's what makes Claxton fruitcakes so dang good: (1) Cake-to-fruit ratio. It's about 50/50, although the fruit may win by a skosh. That, IMHO, is the tastiest ratio. (Your mileage may vary) (2) The fruit tastes GOOD. Frequently, candied fruit has a chemical taste, especially candied cherries. But I’ve never detected that in a Claxton. (3) Low Rent. We know a person can buy cans of inexpensive mixed nuts--but invariably, 50%-or-more of the can will be “lowly peanuts.” Similarly, "cheap fruitcake" often goes heavy on raisins throughout the cake, with showy colored fruit only along the top surface. NOT so with Claxton. In addition to the fruit, it contains a satisfying quotient of quality chopped nuts. (4) Speaking of which, as an avid baker myself, I’m intrigued that Claxton can place chopped nuts in its batter, yet they're not the least soggy. I suspect they go that extra mile, and toast the nut pieces BEFORE adding them to the batter. As my mother used to say: “Class will always out.” (5) Shrewd Configuration. A lot of fruitcakes are big, shaped like a door wreath or an aspiring cinder block. The problem with either is that within 2-4 days, when half that cake is still uneaten, the remaining portion ceases tasting fresh--too much surface area. Alternatively, no matter how many pounds of Claxton fruitcake you buy, each pound is a separately sealed "stick", like an elongated cube of butter. So, that shape means only the small end of the stick is open to the air (if you fail to wrap it after opening it). Meanwhile, each 1-lb. stick is so well sealed, that it will be delightfully fresh when you open it – even weeks after receiving it. (I store any unopened "sticks" in the refrigerator for a month or more, with no subsequent regrets.) (6) Dark Cake Version. I’m of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" genus. As such, I'm so keen about the "regular cake" version that during the decade-plus I’ve been eating Claxton, I've never strayed from the light, and succumbed to the dark. You’ll have to be your own pioneer regarding this alternative version. Johnny Carson, the late, TONIGHT SHOW host, had a decades-long running gag that there were only six fruitcakes in the U.S. He added "It just seems like more because nobody wants ‘em, and people keep re-gifting those six." Well, I've re-gifted a few other presents in my life, but NEVER a Claxton. Conversely, if you discover the Claxton is NOT to your liking (you probably like that potato salad with vinegar, too, right?), please don’t hesitate re-gifting YOUR Claxton to ME.
