Spear & Jackson CBP65 6 1/2" Carpenters Block Plane

Well made, accurately machined. After honing the blade it was ready to use. Possibly the first metal plane in my experience that didn't need hours of fettle. Good value.

Well made and comfortable in the hand. Cuts smoothly and does the job perfectly for small woodworking tasks. Great value for the quality.

Been using mine for a while now and for what I use it for it's great. The plane is of decent quality and comfortable to use, everything moves and tightens as it should but tbh the plane iron is absolutely dreadful. I've never had an iron get serrated the more I sharpen and it really doesn't stay sharp for long but it's sufficient for my purposes so I won't complain, FYI a Stanley iron will fit as a replacement if needed

Nice little plane

Received this today. First impression is quite heavy for one handed use. The S&J logo is a sticker in the thumb recess which is annoying. The sole is pretty good and almost flat, could easily be flattened. The adjustable mouth is nicely machined and parallel. I haven’t sharpened the blade but it did cut well on some rough timber. The big drawback for me is the seating for the blade is machined on a slant so the blade doesn’t sit square to the mouth and therefore the gap between the adjustable throat and the blade edge is on a slant by over 1.5mm rendering the feature almost redundant. It’s a shame as at under £20 it’s not expensive and if it were just for rough work might be ok but I want more and the uneven gap means I will return for refund. If the bed for the blade was even it would be a keeper.

Worked well

I was very impressed with this block plain. I is well made and of smart appearance with black enamelled metal and brass adjustment knobs. Once the blade had been sharpened it held its edge well. The depth of cut was easy to adjust and the tool sat well in the hand. It was possible to take the finest of slivers off the end grain of a mitred joint. A well made traditional carpenters tool and good value for money.

The Plane bottom surface was well finished the cutting tool very sharp, not fully used yet.

This is a neat little block plane that never gets completely put away. Its one of those tools that remains handy. It’s an entry level tool that doesn’t cost much and does a decent job on normal projects. I have to think about costs and yes, I have better, more expensive planes but it can be adjusted to do good work and is generally available on my table or bench for the kind of stuff that I do.

Sharp and worked well out of the box. Reasonably priced when compared to competitor products

Great value for money. With a little honing and adjustment can be planing lovely little curls.
