These are not sesame leaves. They are actually perilla leaves. The Korean word for perilla leaves is (kkaennip). The first part of this word (kkhae), means “seasame.” So, a direct, literal translation of “kkaennip” into English is “sesame leaf.” This linguistic quirk is the primary reason for the common misnomer. While the sesame plant does have leaves, they are not typically eaten in Korean or other cuisines. They are generally considered to be quite tough and not particularly flavorful. So, if you see “sesame leaves” in a Korean recipe or at a Korean grocery store, especially in a context where they are being eaten as a vegetable or pickled, it almost certainly refers to perilla leaves (kkaennip).

Very tasty! Drape a leaf over some sticky rice and shove it in your mouth. Tons of flavor and you will wonder how they fit so many leaves in this tiny container.

I'm always about discovering new food and really enjoyed this product immensely. We wanted to try perilla leaves for Korean BBQ night but no one has them around here. The leaves of this product are packed in a spicy sauce and layered expertly inside the can, which was surprising and kind of cool. I guess I expected them to be mushy and in pieces but they were absolutely sturdy and perfect. I'm not even quite sure how to describe the flavor, very much like basil but with a kick of anise, plus the hot sauce - all I can say is wow! I will definitely be buying these again.

This was very good and reminded me of how my mom's tasted!! There was definitely more in the can than I thought there would be too!! Will be ordering again..

This is on the spicy side but great to eat accompanied with rice.

Love these. My eldest son and I can't get enough of these. He will eat a whole can by himself at a time.

I'm korean and can't find this stuff unless i go out of state but this tastes so bad. Not spicy and the sauce tasted wierd, had to throw away all of them cause they tasted so wierd and gross.
